Oxytetracycline is used to treat infections caused by Chlamydia (e.g., the chest infection psittacosis, the eye infection trachoma, and the genital infection urethritis) and infections caused by Mycoplasma organisms (e.g., pneumonia). Its hydrochloride is commonly used. Oxytetracycline hydrochloride is yellow crystalline powder, odorless, bitter; it attracts moisture; the color gradually becomes darker when exposed to light, and it is easy to damage and fail in alkaline solution.
Oxytetracycline is especially valuable in treating nonspecific urethritis, Lyme disease, brucellosis, cholera, typhus, tularaemia, and infections caused by Chlamydia, Mycoplasma and Rickettsia. Doxycycline is now preferred to oxytetracycline for many of these indications because it has improved pharmacologic features.

Oxytetracycline Hydrochloride is highly effective in treating bacterial infections caused by Chlamydia (such as psittacosis chest infections, trachoma eye infections, and urethritis genital infections) and Mycoplasma organisms (such as pneumonia). It is also used to treat nonspecific urethritis, Lyme disease, brucellosis, cholera, typhus, and tularaemia.
The product must be stored under light-proof conditions. Exposure to light causes its color to gradually darken, and the active compounds degrade rapidly in alkaline solutions, rendering the antibiotic ineffective.
